Distinguished Alumni
Richard Hunsaker ’58

As a graduate of Chaminade High School when it was located at the original campus in the Cheviot Hills area of West Los Angeles, Richard (Dick) Hunsaker was a member of the School’s fifth graduating class. He was involved in numerous school activities including sodality, drama, Letterman’s Club, student government and earned selection to the academic Honor Roll. Sports were a particular love for Dick, who lettered in football playing left tackle, and in basketball he was a dominant center.

Dick obtained his degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California and in 1976, with three partners, founded Hunsaker & Associates. Today, as president of the firm, he is primarily involved in reviewing engineering plans and negotiating with clients and governmental agencies in the development of major, master planned communities throughout Southern California. His work over the years has distinguished him as a highly respected leader in his industry.

His service to both the Church and community at large also distinguishes him. Among many activities in which he is involved with the Diocese of Orange, Dick also serves as a member of its Construction Committee. He recently served as President for the Orange County Chapter of Legatus, an organization of Catholic CEOs and their spouses who have a mission to study, live, and spread the Faith in their business, professional and personal lives. In addition to his philanthropic support to Chaminade as a member of the President’s Circle and a donor to the current Capital Campaign, Dick has supported Servite High School, Connelly High School and in a most major way, the founding and development of Santa Margarita High School in Lake Forest, California.

Recognition of these services led to Dick’s invitation to join the Knights of Malta, a lay religious order whose mission is to defend the faith and to serve the poor. He was initiated after making the requisite trip to care for the sick at Lourdes in May, 1999.

Other community involvement includes support of Toys for Tots, House of Hope for Women & Children, and the National Council on Seniors Housing in addition to serving on the Principal’s Council of Santa Margarita High School, the Growth Management Task Force for the City of Laguna Niguel and on a committee for the Boy Scouts of America.

Today we gratefully honor Dick as a beacon of leadership, strengthening the legacy of Catholic education while supporting the spiritual and material needs of others in his community. Because of his service and philanthropic generosity, our Catholic community is stronger and the Chaminade community better prepared to serve the educational and spiritual needs of young men and women.
