Middle School Counseling

The counseling department at Chaminade College Preparatory Middle School provides counseling in the three domains of academic concerns, personal/social development, and career or future goals.  In addition, the department offers parent education, and parent, student and teacher support. Counselors are keenly aware of the challenges that face their students in transitioning from an elementary to middle school setting. Counselors are assigned to students based on the child’s last name and remain with that student until he or she leaves Chaminade.

The counseling department welcomes and encourages parents to individually consult with a counselor regarding their child. Please feel free to email, call or set up an in person appointment to discuss any concerns or questions you might have.

Counselors attend all faculty team meetings of their grade level(s), which occur every two weeks. During the meetings, counselors gather information and possible concerns from teachers, share updates and create action plans which involve students and their families. Each counselor acts as a liaison between teachers and families by offering ideas and solutions to meet the individual needs of each child in their educational and developmental process. Counselors provide consultation and collaboration with teachers regarding individual students about whom they may be concerned. In addition, the counselor provides helpful techniques for teachers of students with special needs.

Counselors provide referrals for professional and student tutors as well as a variety of adjunct services including psycho-educational testing, child or family therapy and educational therapy services. Counselors work closely with psychologists in coordinating educational testing including distributing and collecting assessment materials from teachers and attending meetings where results are summarized and goals are set.

Counselors in all grade levels provide individual and group support for the students in the areas of conflict resolution, study skills, interpersonal relationships, anger management, adjustment to middle school, cliques, self-esteem, acting out behavior, and stress management. In addition to these services, the counselors track the individual academic progress of each student and make any necessary interventions. The counseling department also works with the religion department to further morality lessons in the areas of bullying, sex education, and substance abuse prevention.  Evening events for parents are also offered throughout the year and are publicized via email blast to parents.

Finally, the counselors gather resources to share with parents, students, and teachers in a variety of ways. Parents are welcome to check-out resource packets from the Counseling Lending Library, located in the Front Office in Mrs. Barbara Willick’s office. Resource packets on a variety of topics assist parents in working with their child and promote a greater understanding of the issues at hand. The counseling resource webpage also contains external links, PDF reproducibles and articles, and a list of suggested reading compiled by the counseling department.
