Health and Safety

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Chaminade is fully aware of the growing local, state, and national concerns related to the potential spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. The safety of our students, families, and employees is our highest priority. Chaminade continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation through information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and is following the advice of these public agencies and taking all precautions for personal care.

Our Current Plan of Action

  • Online remote instruction to be provided for the rest of the school year

Chaminade’s objective is to continue to deliver the curriculum to our students. We are committed to minimizing instructional disruption and maintaining a sense of community through digital communications. With our current IT infrastructure, learning platform, and teacher/student readiness, we are able to implement an online learning environment.

Our student body is already proficient in using online tools and resources in their classes. Following are the general components of our remote learning structure:

  • Student participation in online lessons
  • Work submitted electronically
  • Teacher feedback and grades will continue to be delivered
  • Regular teacher and student communication via email
  • Online discussion boards
  • Other online resources to facilitate student learning
Middle school and high school students can access online instructions and guidelines by visiting the Online Instruction page on our website.

Campus leadership will continue to provide updates to our community as the weeks progress.

  • What is the school doing to prevent transmission of COVID-19?

Chaminade currently has hand sanitizers in every classroom and shared space, including the main offices at both campuses.

Our maintenance crew is already in the practice of cleaning all surfaces, including doors, door handles, and student desks once a day.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent the novel coronavirus COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid exposure to the virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Stay home when you are sick.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
    • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
      • CDC does not recommend for people who are well, to wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
      • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

      • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
For information about handwashing, see CDC’s Handwashing website

For information specific to healthcare, see CDC’s Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Settings

These are everyday habits that can help prevent the spread of several viruses. CDC does have specific guidance for travelers.
  • How can I help my child adjust to online learning?

Although we are not physically at school right now, the Chaminade counseling team is still here to serve as a resource. Counselors will be available in the coming weeks to answer questions or concerns via email, or if you’d like, via a virtual meeting. Please feel free to contact your counselor or the school therapist to request a time to meet, and they can help coordinate a confidential online meeting space.

We understand, given the global attention that COVID-19 has attracted, students may become anxious about both the virus itself and the new online academic program Chaminade is implementing. Moving to an online environment will have challenges, and it can feel isolating to students used to daily interactions with their peers. It is important to be reminded that countless students around the globe are having a similar experience – including their teachers.

Please read 10 Tips to Help Students Adjust to Online Instruction We hope these tips will help your child find success in this new environment.
  • What is the policy on school and family travel?

All school trips planned for Spring Break have been canceled.

Be aware of CDC travel guidelines when planning Spring Break trips. Visit the CDC website for information regarding travel restrictions.

Please refer to the March 19, 2020 State Department Global Health Advisory regarding international travel. Based on this advisory, any student, parents, faculty/ staff, and outside vendors traveling outside the United States will not be able to visit the campus for 14 days upon returning to the U.S.

Anyone who has been in contact with someone who has traveled outside of the U.S. and is exhibiting any flu-like symptoms will not be allowed on campus for 14 days and must be symptom-free for 48 hours.
  • How can I manage anxiety in these uncertain times?

How a child/teen responds to news of novel Coronavirus may depend on several factors, such as
    1. Age of the child
    2. Language/comprehension abilities and developmental level of the child.
    3. Presence, severity and type of anxiety disorder(s) or other psychiatric conditions.
    4. Prior history of trauma or serious illness of loved ones or self.
    5. The occurrence of other recent stressors or major life events (such as parental divorce, death of loved ones, major move, change of school), etc.
Therefore, a parent’s response would need to be tailored to the individual situation and context surrounding their child/teen.

Please read How to Manage Anxiety in Uncertain Times by Chaminade's school therapist, Kathryn Howard, LMFT, PPS/CWA, for a few general tips for communicating with an anxious/child or teen about coronavirus.

If your child/teen is suffering from a moderate to severe anxiety disorder, please consult your child’s mental health professional/psychiatrist/pediatrician, to devise or modify your child/teen’s individualized treatment plan.

  • How I can continue my spiritual development?

Fr. Chaminade reminds us, “let us always tend to the pure love of God and to the profound contempt of ourselves, and the Holy Spirit will enable us to work wonders.”  One of the greatest attributes of Chaminade is our sense of family spirit.  Chaminade is our “home away from home,” and we understand how difficult it may be for students to be away from their classmates during the coronavirus pandemic.  Hence, the Offices of Mission and Campus Ministry want to continue to support the spiritual wellbeing of our students through a variety of resources and online platforms.

  • Can I continue to attend Sunday Mass at my local parish?

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles announced the suspension of Masses amid the current health threat due to COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

“I deeply regret that we are forced to temporarily suspend public celebration of the Mass in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,” said Archbishop José H. Gomez in a statement to the faithful of the Archdiocese. “What we do in the Church, we do out of love for God and love for our brothers and sisters. We are taking this extraordinary step today out of love and concern for those in our families and communities who are most vulnerable to this deadly coronavirus.”

Archbishop Gomez stressed that the decision was “not made lightly,” and that it was made after “much prayer and reflection” and in consultation with the Archdiocese's auxiliary bishops, Council of Priests, lay advisors, and government and public health officials.

Catholics are encouraged to continue to pray at home with their families and join to the sacrifice of the Mass by making an act of spiritual communion. They are also encouraged to participate in the Holy Mass via the Internet. The Archdiocese will provide a livestream of non-public Masses celebrated by the priests from the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels daily and on Sunday via Facebook, @lacatholics, (facebook.com/lacatholics/) or visit lacatholics.org/emergency/. The daily Mass (M-F) in English at 12:10 p.m. and the Sunday Masses in English at 10 a.m. and in Spanish at 12:30 p.m. will be livestreamed.

NOTE: Chaminade has suspended any morning Communion Services and Masses that are held initially in our campus chapels until further notice.
