Middle School Summer School Classes for Entering Students

Entering 6th Grade Reading Comprehension and Language Skills (Entering 6th grade)

This course will help incoming 6th graders with the reading skills necessary for success at Chaminade. Particular attention will be paid to comprehension. Students will use the assigned summer reading novel as a resource. Homework will be assigned and grades will be provided to administration for review.

Session 2:  Meets Daily, M - F 8:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Fee: $450

Entering 6th Grade Math (Entering 6th grade)

Incoming students will benefit from this course emphasizing math skills needed for 6th grade. This course will include the review and practice of all four basic operations with whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Homework will be assigned and grades will be provided to administration for review.

Meets Daily M-F, 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. Session 2

Introduction to Chaminade (NEW Students Entering 6th - 8th grade)

This class is offered as a stand-alone workshop, or as part of our Eagles Take Flight program (see below). Students will meet other new students, learn about the campus, and discover the keys to success in middle school. This course is ideal for incoming students.

Times: 10:10 – 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. Session 2 only.
Fee: $155

Eagles Take Flight (Entering 6th grade)

This 13-day workshop will immerse new students in a daily three-hour experience especially designed to prepare them for starting the new school year off right at Chaminade’s Chatsworth campus. Each student will attend three classes daily to expose them to the skills and knowledge expected of entering Chaminade students. One hour of study skills will be complimented by an hour long “Introduction to Chaminade” class, plus an hour of computer keyboarding and applications to prepare for our 1-1 Tablet PC Program. Dates: Session 2.

Mock Trial Camp (Weeks 3-5 AM) (Entering 6th – 8th grade)

Come learn about the criminal justice system from the coaches of the four-time Los Angeles County Champion Chaminade Mock Trial Team. Students will learn the skills of trial advocacy including rules of evidence, how to examine witnesses, give opening statements, and make closing arguments. On the last day of camp, students will have the opportunity to present a criminal trial for parents and family. Open to all 6th, 7th, & 8th graders. WEST HILLS CAMPUS

2018 Summer Musical Theater Intensive

Entering 7th – 12th grade

Join us this summer for a three-week intensive program for grades 7–12 presenting SUESSICAL! SEUSSICAL is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza that transports us to the world of Dr. Seuss, bringing to life such characters as Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie LaBird, a little boy with a huge imagination named JoJo and many more, with an amazing musical score by Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Students will learn how to tell a story and effectively communicate with an audience through scene study, character work, song interpretation and musical theatre dance. All of their hard work will culminate in performances for family and friends on the main stage of the Tutor Family Center for the Performing Arts. Guided by Broadway professionals, students will sharpen their skills and have fun in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Students are expected to attend a placement audition the day prior to the first day of workshop with a song and memorized monologue.

INTRODUCTION TO MUSICAL THEATRE

 

Entering 1st – 6th grade

 

This one-week course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop their skills and techniques in the following areas: music, movement, and acting. Students will work on scenes and songs from SEUSSICAL. This course will use Musical Theatre repertoire appropriate for the age, skill, talent, and ability of the students. Students will develop basic skills and knowledge in the rehearsal process and promote confidence in their performance abilities. Students will have an opportunity to show off their talents to friends and family at the end of the workshop on the main stage of the Tutor Family Center for the Performing Arts.

Summer Dance Intensive 

(Entering 6th –12th grade)

Taught by Chaminade’s Varsity Dance Coach, this dance intensive will allow participants to receive training in all
areas of dance including, jazz, ballet, hip-hop as well as intense technique
training in the form of leaps and turns. Dancers will also be taught a series
of dances with new, cutting edge choreography. All of these new skills will
come together in the form of a show which will be presented on the last day of
the intensive all presented in the new Theater in the Tutor Family Center for
the Performing arts.

Introduction to Aerial Dance Technique

(Entering 6th –12th grade)

This course for young dancers is designed to give students the foundational skills to set them
on a journey toward becoming an aerialist. The focus of the class will include
learning aerial safety and etiquette, stretching and conditioning techniques,
standard climbs and footlocks, and appreciation of the art form. Students will
have an opportunity to work with silks, hammock, and lyra in this fun and
exciting workshop.

ROBOTICS FOR COMPETITION

Weeks 1 and 4 Full Day

Entering 5th – 12th grade

In this class presented by Chaminade’s internationally recognized Eagle Engineering robotics team, you will be introduced to basic engineering concepts in a way that’s so fun, you’ll forget that it’s preparing you as the next generation of innovators, inventors, and technicians. Students will work in teams create and operate a robot to compete in a game inspired by this year’s VEX Robotics Competition. No experience necessary. Involves hand tools and light metal work. Closed-toed shoes required. The course fee includes a healthy snack and lunch every day of the week!

ELECTRONICS AND PROGRAMMING BASICS

Weeks 2 and 5 

Entering 5th – 12th grade

Your inventor spirit will be awakened and empowered by this fun and exciting introduction to building circuits and programming microcontrollers! Guided by Chaminade’s Eagle Engineering programming team, students will enter a world of endless possibility and potential inside the Arduino microcontroller and programming platform. No experience is necessary to start plugging in wires, sensors, lights, and motors to unleash the many capabilities of CodeREV’s Creator Bot Kit – built upon the Arduino platform used by hobbyists and inventors all over the world. After just a week of hands-on projects, students will be well on their way to a lifetime of techno-creativity.

Vex IQ Robotics

Entering 4-8th grade

Weeks 1, 2, 4 and 5  

VEX IQ is a robotics platform designed to transform STEM learning for young student. The curriculum offers flexible units of instruction that can be used in sequence, in chunks, or as standalone lessons. The project-based units instill proper engineering and programming practices from an early age, while maintaining the fun and excitement that comes from playing with VEX IQ. VEX IQ curriculum is a learning tool that will excite and inspire students. This course is offered to students in grades 4-8. Come for one week, or all four.  Students enrolled in multiple weeks will be grouped together to complete more challenging activities.
