Fund-A-Need: Innovation Education

Developing the Creative Problem Solvers of Tomorrow

Our Fund-a-Need for this year’s Gala will pay for innovation spaces and project-based STEAM curricula that activate the maker mindset and give all students essential skills for adapting to a technology-driven future. This comprehensive approach centers on hands-on applications of academic concepts, creative use of technology and integration of STEM with the Humanities to support students in becoming the creative problem solvers of tomorrow regardless of their chosen path.

The middle school would invest new funds in Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a nationally recognized K-12 program that provides hands-on learning experiences in engineering, biomedical science, and computer science.  The program exposes students to design-thinking and STEM through project-based classes so that students get exposure to pursuit of objectives instead of task-oriented lessons.  Students work through the design life cycle and iterative thinking to develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. PLTW modules provide students with the stepping stones for potential career paths and a chance to sample areas of interest before advancing to more in-depth paths at the high school.

The high school will apply funding to equip a dedicated engineering lab for new courses in robotics, 3D modeling, architectural design and aerospace engineering as well as new equipment to enhance life sciences and math curricula.  Donations will also help meet the demand for new course offerings in computer science and game design as well as web and app development. These courses will magnify the impact of existing core classes by applying the concepts learned there in new and meaningful ways.

Both the middle school and high school would apply the funding to reinvent existing community locations to establish maker-oriented spaces for exploratory work and creativity. With access to various means for expression of ideas and collaborative problem-solving, students will be able to learn valuable soft skills while engaging in learning a much deeper level.
