Brando Tessar '10

Brando Tessar was a two-sport athlete at Chaminade College Preparatory, playing both football and baseball. He played three years on the Varsity Football Team and was named 2009 Mission League Offensive Player of the Year, 2010 CIF All-Star Game MVP, 2010 Mission League MVP, and chosen for the 2010 First Team All-CIF. In the off season, Brando cheered his friends and classmates on in basketball as one of the founders of The Cage student section.

Brando played on the Varsity Baseball team all four years under head coach Frank Mutz. He was a pitcher and outfielder. In 2010, he went 9-2 on the mound with a 1.45 earned run average, four shutouts and 103 strike outs. He was named the 2010 Mission League Player of the Year and named to the First Team for All-CIF. He was also named 2010 Chaminade Male Athlete of the Year.

In 2010, Brando was also an honorable mention in the Rawlings Sporting Goods and Perfect Game USA, Rawlings Pre-Season All-American First Team; only 400 players across the United States are considered for this honor. He was named to the California All-Region Second Team. He also played for the Milwaukee Brewers Gray Area Code team with future teammates, Brandon Brennan and Ryon Healy.

After graduating from Chaminade, Brando was drafted in the 25th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Instead of joining the MLB immediately, he attended University of Oregon on a baseball scholarship. He made 12 relief appearances and one start his freshman season. He pitched in a total of three combined shutouts and in 17.1 innings on the mound, totaled 10 strike outs.

In 2011, Brando pitched for La Crosse Loggers, in the Northwoods League, a collegiate summer baseball league that mimics the experiences of minor league baseball. Players experience using wooden bats, overnight road trips and playing in front of stadiums of fans. Brando was named to the Northwoods League All-Star Game.

Brando had nine starts during the 2012 season, struck out 37, and finished the season with a 4-1 record. He pitched a complete-game shutout against University of Connecticut, surrendering only four hits, striking out six and walking two batters. In his final season at Oregon, Brando started in 10 games, playing a total of 50.2 innings. He struck out 43 of 220 batters he faced.

Over the course of his career at Oregon, Brando pitched a total of 127.1 innings, started in 22 games and struck out 92 batters. The Ducks went to the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament 3 out of the 4 years Brando was on the team. In 2014, Brando was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 25th round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

Brando graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Social Sciences with an emphasis in crime and law. He currently works in the staffing industry. He has opened offices in Portland and Pittsburgh. He manages and operates the Portland market for one the nation’s largest technical staffing firms. He is also a newlywed; he married his bride, Kendall, in November 2017.
