Oregon State is four victories away from going to the Rose Bowl, but the mantra this week has been on worrying only about this week. For Beavers fifth-year senior left guard Adam Speer, that will not be a problem. Speer, a two-year starter for the Beavers, spent fall Saturdays during his high school career at the Rose Bowl, where UCLA hosts Oregon State on Saturday, and dreamed of playing college football there. "I went to a bunch of UCLA games my junior and senior year," Speer said in a phone interview this week. "I definitely grew up a UCLA fan, but now I'm a UCLA hater." Speer, who attended Chaminade Prep of West Hills, added that despite recommendations from then-offensive line coach Mark Weber, former Bruins coach Karl Dorrell decided not to offer Speer a scholarship. "I went to UCLA's camp and (Weber) recruited me, but Dorrell said, nope, too short," the 6-foot-3, 285-pound Speer said. "So I came to Oregon State and found my home here." Speer said he was "just shy of 6-3, and weighed 275" coming out of high school. He is in his second year starting on Oregon State's offensive line, which is leading the way for the Pacific-10 Conference's leading rusher, freshman Jacquizz Rodgers. He is averaging 118.1 yards per game, and has nine rushing touchdowns. But even with UCLA's offensive line woes this season, Speer said he is glad how things worked out. "I have one class and I finished up my structural engineering degree," Speer said. "I hunt two days a week, goose hunting is good up here right now. I play football, hunt and go to school. I love my life."

Inside the Huddle: Q&A with Chaminade kicker Matt Goudis
Eagles play Crespi tonight at home
By: article taken from LA Daily News
Date: 10/17/2008
Article ID: 1127
Inside the Huddle: Q&A with Chaminade kicker Matt Goudis After a breakout freshman year, during which he totaled seven field goals, Chaminade’s Matt Goudis is having another fine season. Through five games, he’s 5 for 7 on field goals – and both misses have been from 50 yeards or longer – and most of his kickoffs have been touchbacks. Goudis is the areas’ most dynamic kicker, and with two-plus years ahead of him no one has a brighter future. Daily News: How do you like being a kicker? Matt Goudis: I love it. If my team doesn’t get a chance to score a touchdown, I know I can get us at least three points. DN: Isn’t it nerve-racking, especially when you’re trying to kick a winning field goal at the end of the game? MG: Yeah, it can get pretty nerve-racking. It can get pretty shaky. Normally, I just focus on kicking the football, and the rest is just a blur. I just try to hit the ball, and the next thing I know, the ball is going through the uprights. DN: It’s been said that kicking is 90% boredom and 10% panic. Can you relate? MG: Oh yes. Most of the time you’re just standing around on the sidelines watching, and then all of sudden you’re in a hurry to get out there and try to kick a field goal. That’s just the way it is. Everything happens all at once. DN: You work with Chris Sailer, who is known as perhaps the nation’s top kicking coach. How much has he helped you? MG: A tremendous amount. Before I started working with Chris, I was just an average kicker. Since I’ve been seeing him every Sunday, my kicking game has gotten a lot better. DN: Who else is out there with you on Sundays? MG: There is usually about ten of us. Brandon Lluis from Notre Dame, Mauricio Alfonso from Loyola, and a few others. Jordan Mannisto (ex-Westlake) used to go there last year. DN: You played Varsity last year at Chaminade as a freshman, and now you’re a sophomore, which still makes you one of the youngest players on the team, Do you feel like you fit in with the juniors and seniors, like you’re in the club? MG: Actually, I do, especially now that this is my second year. I’m one of the guys. A lot of my teammates were juniors last year , and now they’re seniors, so I feel almost as experienced as everyone else, like we’re all part of the same team. DN: Everyone seems to hate the rule that return specialists can’t return kickoffs from the end zone. But as a kicker, you must love it, right? MG: Oh yeah, I do. All I have to do is kick it one yard deep into the end zone, and the ball goes to the 20-yard line. I don’t have to worry about kicking it any farther than that. DN: But if you don’t, then you’re part of the coverage team, right? MG: Yeah. But that’s OK. I already have three tackles this season.

The Chaminade Cross Country teams competed today in the Viewpoint Invitational at Malibu Creek State Park. The JV Boys set the tone of the meet by completely dominating the field of Campbell Hall, Viewpoint, Malibu and Grace Brethern. Our 5 scoring runners finished in the top ten, giving them a TEAM VICTORY! Leading the team over the rugged 3 mile course was Andreas Lazaris with a race winning time of 21:23. She was followed by Heidi Saso, 5th place in 24:41, Morgan Harbert, 7th place in 26:02 and Mary Diamond, 30th place in 35:43. The boys varsity team put together a great race, with all seven of our runners finishing in the top 16. Their great effort gave them a second place finish only 3 points behind Viewpoint. Christian Fuentes continued to lead the Eagles with a First Place finish in a time of 18:21. Finishing in 4th place was Kevin Gorman-18:50, 7th place Jared Dinowitz-19:50, 11th place Donovan Frost-20:13, 12th place Ryan Ortega-20:21, 15th place Joe Kozal-21:00 and 16th place Matthew Gomez-21:09. Day 5 - Records, 1-2 finish for Henning, McCullough

Team USA Highlights (single session) Team USA stars Walter Henning and prep Conor McCullough CA gave Team USA another 1-2, this time in the hammer throw. Henning led from the first to last throw, with an American Junior Record 76.92 / 252-04 on his last throw. On his 3rd throw, in danger of not making final 3, McCullough exploded for 75.88 / 248-11 for a HSR with the implement and to move into 2nd. In the women's 3k, prep Laurynne Chetelat CA blazed a 9:15.11 for 6th, good for #5 all-time US and winning a tight battle for that spot with 5 others within 1.81 seconds of her. Prep Ryann Krais finished 9th in the heptathlon, with a legal PR 5457. She long-jumped 5.72m/18-09.25 (+1.6w), threw the javelin 31.88m/104-07 and ran 2:19.15 for 800. Team USA took GOLD in both 4x100 relays ... The USA men, with the quartet of collegians Dante Sales and Antonio Sales, prep Marquise Goodwin TX, and collegian Terrell Wilks, clocked a winning 38.98 The USA women, with collegians Jeneba Tarmoh, Shayla Mahan, Gabrielle Glenn, and Tiffany Townsend, stopped the clock at 43.66. Collegian Teona Rodgers flew over the 100H for the GOLD, clocking 13.40 into a 2.4 headwind The Team USA 4x400s raced into Sunday's final with semifinal victories (and leading times) of 3:29.54 for women and 3:05.25 for men. Prep Christian Taylor GA anchored the men's team, while preps Lanie Whittaker FL and Erica Alexander TX contributed to the women. Hammer Walter Henning, who attended North Carolina this season but transferred to Louisiana State at mid-semester, was the second thrower up and lofted the ball and chain out to 249-09, setting the bar very high for all of those to follow. After the first round, Siarheil Kalamoets of Belarus was second at 243-6, Akos Hudi of Hungary was third at 238-1 and Conor McCullough of Chaminade (West Hills, Ca.) was in ninth place at 222-3. In the second round, Pawel Fajdek of Poland moved into second with a throw of 247-1. McCullough improved to 232-0, which put him in ninth place with just one round remaining and the thought that he needed to be in the top eight to be guaranteed three additional throws. In the third round, Aleh Dubitski of Belarus moved into third place with a toss of 247-5. Two throwers later and McCullough found himself in the ring needing at least a throw of at least 237-1 to earn three additional throws. No only did he come through with a lifetime best of 248-11, he moved into second place. Although there were improvements by throwers in the final three rounds—Henning improve his winning distance to 252-4 on the final throw of the competition—the exact medal winners had been determined. It marked the first time in that the U.S. had won even one medal in the World Junior Championships. In going 1-2, the American duo defeated the World Junior leader at 257-3, Denis Lukyanov of Russia, and the 2007 World Youth champion Andriy Martynyuk of Ukraine, who had thrown 247-7 earlier this year. Martynyuk finished ninth at 237-1 and Lukyanov was tenth at 232-2. It was also not the case of the U.S. duo catching a lucky throw as can be seen when looking at their two series. Henning: 249-09, foul, 243-6, 249-1, 230-2, 252-4. McCullough: 222-3, 232-0, 248-11, 242-11, 243-7, 241-2. McCullough’s 248-11 is a high school record with the International Junior Weight (13.2 lb), breaking the old mark of 241-5 set by Henning last year. Henning broke his own American Junior Record with the implement, which he set at 251-10 in May in Chapel Hill. Three weeks ago McCullough set the high school record with the high school 12-pound weight throwing 260-0 to break Henning’s record of 255-11 set last while a student at St. Anthony’s (South Huntington, N.Y.)
Chaminade's Montgomery is emerging as a prospect

My guess is that most knowledgeable fans agree that Hollis Thompson is the odds-on favorite to win the Mission League's most valuable player honor this coming season. And his status as the man to beat is warranted, considering the 6-foot-8 senior from Loyola is as talented as they come and bound for Georgetown. Jules Montgomery, on the other hand, is an unknown commodity. However, the 6-foot-9 senior from Chaminade played well during the spring and summer, gaining some much-needed confidence, and though he isn't considered a threat to the Thompson throne, he could end up being a force in his own right. "Honestly, and I don't just say this because I have been around him for a couple of years, but I think he can play ball at the Division I level,'' former Coach Bryan Cantwell said of Montgomery, who averaged 8.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocks a season ago and had breakout efforts against University and St. Francis. Optimism is at an all-time high given the fact that Montgomery suited up for the ICAN All-Stars over the past couple of months and earned his share of attention from college scouts despite playing alongside highly touted teammates such as Fremont's Tony Freeland and La Mirada's Derrick Williams. "We have had Jules with us a couple of times this summer and he's like a completely different player. He's stepped his game up,'' new Chaminade Coach Todd Wolfson said. "No knock on Hollis, I'm not taking anything away from him, he's a great player, I'm just saying watch out for Jules. He's going to surprise some people.''

Conor McCullough has broken all of Walter Henning's prep hammer throw records, most recently setting the national high school mark with an effort of 260 feet using the 12-pound (5.5 kilogram) implement June 28 at the U.S. Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships in North Carolina. But when it comes to the 6-kg weight, Henning demonstrated again Saturday that he is second to none. The LSU sophomore, who defeated McCullough - a Chaminade of West Hills senior - on June 22 at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio, bettered his own American under-20 standard with a final-round throw of 252-4 at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. McCullough took second with a 6-kg personal-best of 248-11. Henning and McCullough, whose marks Saturday rank second and fourth on the world junior list this year, also took the top two spots at the national qualifying meet three weeks ago with efforts of 242-4and 233-5.

The outcome of the competition was never in doubt for Conor McCullough. Whether the Chaminade of West Hills standout could produce another record-setting performance in the young men's 12-pound hammer throw was in question until the last round Saturday at the U.S. Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, N.C. It turned out to be worth the wait and then some for McCullough, who set the national high school record with an effort of 260 feet, breaking the mark of 255-11 set May 6, 2007, by Walter Henning, a St. Anthony's High of South Huntington, N.Y., graduate. "It was my last throw in the series, so I knew it was now or never," McCullough said. "I wanted to make it a good one." After winning the state title June 1 with an effort of 250-1 at Cerritos College, McCullough's main goal was just to surpass Henning's national junior-class record of 252-6. But after throwing between 242 and 250 feet in the first five rounds, McCullough unleashed a lifetime-best effort en route to another national record. "They bring out (a second measuring device) if they believe there are any records broken, so when they asked for it, I thought it was (questionable) because I didn't think it went that far," said McCullough, who set a national youth record of 263-9 with the five-kilogram hammer June 1 at the state meet. "But then they announced it and I smiled. I couldn't believe it." McCullough had plenty of motivation after watching Henning produce an American Junior record in the six-kilogram hammer throw June 22 at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Columbus, Ohio, with an effort of 242-4. McCullough took second, throwing 233-5.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Conor McCullough of Chaminade High of West Hills still has a ways to go to catch up to high school national record holder Walter Henning in the hammer. McCullough finished second in the USA Track & Field Junior Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio Stadium on Sunday in a competition won by Henning in an American junior record 242 feet 4 inches. McCullough threw 233-5 to earn one of the two spots on the U.S. team for the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. McCullough, a Canoga Park resident who recently completed his junior year at Chaminade, has broken the national freshman and sophomore high school records in hammer and the all-time mark in the weight throw held by Henning, who attends LSU. "(Henning's marks) are a good aim and a challenge," McCullough said. "I feel like it's an aim to push him farther and him being just a little ahead of me makes me push harder." Henning has won all three competitions against McCullough after the first two competed against one another in the Nike Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina last June. At that time, Henning called the 6-5, 200-pound McCullough the heir to his records and reiterated that Sunday. "I told him that he doesn't break my record this year that he's doing something wrong," Henning said. "He's definitely going to get everything next year and eventually the (junior record). He's throwing further and it definitely shows." Last year, McCullough placed fourth in the IAAF World Youth Games after turning in the top qualifying mark in the prelims - a distance that would have earned him a silver medal in the finals. "When you see the world stage, it gives you a new perspective," said McCullough, whose father Conor was a 1984 and 1988 Olympian in the hammer for his native Ireland. "It gave me motivation pushed me this year after finishing out of the medals and walk home with nothing." In other finals, Highland of Palmdale sophomore Jessica Davis placed fifth in the women's 200 meters in 24.02 seconds. Anna Sperry, a Simi Valley High graduate who attends BYU, was 10th in the 1,500 in 4:39.60.

Chaminade’s Equestrian Team Finishes the IEL Season in Sixth Place Equestrian riders have completed their fourth season in the Interscholastic Equestrian League. All individual and team points have been compiled and the year end stats and standings announced on the IEL website. This year IEL was comprised of 63 schools with 386 registered riders from southern California middle and high schools. All four shows were held at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in Lakeview Terrace. Chaminade had the second largest teams with 25 members. The novice division dressage riders did an outstanding job this past season compiling both individual and team points. The Chaminade Eagles placed sixth in Overall Team Standings which is an accomplishment deserving recognition and applause. Four years ago, in the 2003-2004 season, Chaminade entered the IEL with six riders. Schools that had been competing for many years soon came to realize that Chaminade was an up and coming team, a team to watch. In the second year of IEL competition with over 25 riders, Chaminade placed third in Overall Team Standings and was awarded a perpetual trophy for first place in the Novice Division. The Eagles had arrived and were warmly welcomed by the IEL. Chaminade riders have proven that the team rides strong and aims high. Congrats to all team members, trainers, and parents for supporting this year round sport for the last four years. Team parents, trainers, returning riders and new riders eagerly look forward to next season, season number five. At the Equestrian Team Awards Ceremony special recognition was given to top riders and graduating seniors: Dressage Champion (1st place) – Novice Division – Kendra Young-Reed, Dressage – Novice Division – Third Place Tie – Megan Sullivan and Emily Saunders, Dressage – Freshman Division – Third Place - Jenna Callaway and Jumpers – Junior Varsity Division – Reserve Champion (2nd place) - Megan Beazley. Seniors, Katie LoPresti and Megan Sullivan received Founders’ plaques to recognize them as members of the first Chaminade IEL team and the first graduating seniors who have been involved in the program for four years. On a very hot day, Saturday, May 17th, Conor McCullough was Chaminade's lone representative at the CIF-SS Finals in Mt. SAC. Competing in two events, McCullough emerged as Division III champion in the Shot Put by throwing 54'7. In his other event, the Discus Throw, McCullough threw well enough for 8th place in Division III. By days end, McCullough's Shot Put was far enough to finish 9th overall in the competition, good enough to move on to the Masters Meet next Friday. However, McCullough, for his Hammer Throw accomplishments, has recently been invited to compete in a Hammer Throw competition next week in Provo, Utah, which he has opted to compete in, which means he will be unable to compete in the Masters Meet. Good luck to Conor as he heads to Utah for competition.

Chaminade coach Gina Hairapetian said it was a game-time decision to start Bliss. She and junior Brittany Labbe were warming up before the game. When it came time to turn in a lineup card, Bliss was in the circle and Labbe was in rightfield. Bliss (14-9) scattered six hits, all singles, over eight innings. She struck out five and retired nine in a row at one point. No St. Paul baserunner got past second base and Bliss, who threw 105 pitches, walked only one batter. "My finger's much better than it was before," said Bliss, who injured the index finger on her right hand trying to catch a comebacker in an April 15 game against Alemany of Mission Hills. "Nothing was hurting. As the intensity of the game grew, I stopped worrying about it." Labbe, Chaminade's onl
