Counseling
Assignment:
Hello, I’m Karen
Valentine and as the Director of Guidance welcome you to stop by
the Guidance Office any time for information or simply to meet
the counselors. Counselor assignments are shown at the top of
this page and are listed by grade level and the student’s last
name. With over 30 years at Chaminade, I look forward to
continuing the relationship with our students and families. My
undergraduate work was done at CSULB, and my Masters Degree in
Child Development was completed in 1975 at CSUN. I also
received a certificate in College Counseling in 1996 at UCSD.
If you would like to receive periodic emails with Guidance News,
please send me an email request with your child’s name and
graduation class.
As a parent of two
Chaminade graduates (Scott, ’92 and Rick, ’95), I am aware of
the strength of the Chaminade preparation for college and the
importance of guidance services. Please contact me with
questions or concerns at any time!

Counseling Assignment:
It’s been wonderful to return to my alma mater since I am a
Chaminade graduate (Class of '99). My undergraduate degree is in
psychology from UCLA, my master's degree from Pepperdine is in
psychology, and I have a Certificate in College Counseling from
UCLA. I am very excited to be here at Chaminade where I can
assist students with their educational and personal goals, and I
feel blessed and honored to be part of the Chaminade family. My
experience as a student here will provide the opportunity to be
a mentor to students because I understand the challenges and
joys of attending such an excellent and dynamic college
preparatory high school.

Counseling Assignment:
I came to Chaminade in 1989 after having completed a Masters of
Science in Counseling Psychology from California Lutheran
University. I also hold a California license as a Marriage and
Family Therapist. As a mother of two adult sons, I have been
through the adolescent and high school years. I am delighted to
assist your children with their education here at Chaminade and
to help them search for colleges and future careers. I look
forward to each day with renewed hope for the future because of
the students’ commitment to family, friends, and education.

Counseling Assignment:
Originally from the Central Valley, I moved to Southern
California over ten years ago to attend college and begin my
career as a counselor and educator. I have my undergraduate
degree in Psychology from California Lutheran University (CLU)
and my Masters degree in Counseling (with a Pupil Personnel
Services K-12 counseling credential) from the University of San
Diego. After working with freshmen and transfer students in
CLU’s admissions office for four and a half years, I moved over
to the “other side of the desk” to work with college-bound high
school students as a college counselor. I enjoy sharing my
experiences in both settings with Chaminade students as they
start exploring colleges and planning their futures. I feel
proud and grateful to do the job I do everyday, especially at a
place like Chaminade where the students and parents are so
welcoming, and where my colleagues are so friendly and
student-centered! I look forward to many more years at
Chaminade…guiding my students to find the college that fits them
best!

Counseling Assignment:
I began my career as an educator in New York and New Jersey as a
teacher of biology and general science. After years of watching
high school students struggle with post-secondary educational
decisions, I returned to Barry University for a Master’s degree
in School Guidance and Counseling. Thus began my second career,
as Director of College Counseling, at a private high school in
Miami Beach, Florida. During this time, I also wrote two
educational guidebooks for teenagers, and a college counseling
newsletter used by counselors around the country.
After moving to California to be closer to family, I began
working at Chaminade in August, 2003. I feel both lucky and
blessed to be working with the wonderful students and adults who
make up the Chaminade family, and I look forward to many years
assisting Chaminade students as they make plans for their
future.

I am very excited to be working as the
school therapist at Chaminade. I have an undergraduate degree
in English from the University of Notre Dame and a Masters
Degree in Counseling Psychology with a Marriage and Family
Therapy emphasis from Mount Saint Mary’s College. I worked in
another private high school for eight years, five of those in
the Counseling Office doing academic, college, and personal
counseling. I have also worked at the Santa Monica-UCLA Rape
Treatment Center as well as at Lost Hills Children’s Services
doing outreach to elementary, middle, and high school students.
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and I look forward
to working with Chaminade students and their families for many
years to come. |
