The
English Department at Chaminade High School combines the
objectives of a sound college preparatory liberal arts education
with the specific Characteristics of Marianist Education that
are the foundation of the school’s mission. To this end, both
regular and honors level English courses in each of the four
grade levels provide a study of literature that facilitates the
development of the whole student in the Marianist tradition. To
effectively foster the development of creative and critical
thinkers and writers, the English courses are designed to
provide a rich literary experience that allows students to
discover who they are, helps them become more aware of the world
around them, and challenges them to examine issues that are
relevant to the universal human experience. In a way that
underscores the Characteristics of Marianism, the literature
selections in each course present issues such as individual
responsibility, faith formation, the role of community, family
spirit, respect, acceptance, understanding, service, and
self-sacrifice. Through in-depth class discussion and frequent
writing about these and other issues, students in each grade
level explore the world of ideas in a variety of texts and learn
to develop their own interpretations through close reading,
careful analysis, and solid prose.
