President Jim Adams Wins Prestigious Business Award

Dear Chaminade Family,

On behalf of the Chaminade College Preparatory Board of Directors, I am proud to announce that President Jim Adams was named the San Fernando Valley Business Journal’s Best Not For Profit Executive. President Adams accepted his award at the Best Not For Profit Awards Reception on May 12. This award follows on the heels of several other awards for Chaminade. In the past year alone, Chaminade was recognized as the first Catholic School in the United States to be named a Model School by The International Center for Leadership in Education.  In addition, Chaminade has also received the following recognitions, including Favorite Private Middle School by the Daily News, One of the Best Private High Schools in LA County by Los Angeles Magazine, one of the Best Places to Work by San Fernando Valley Business Journal, and Outstanding Board Award from the National Catholic Education Association

President Adams would be the first to say that the school and he could not have achieved these various recognitions except for the contributions that so many different people make towards helping Chaminade “Set the Standard.” Even so, it takes great leadership to create an environment for this to occur.  We are deeply grateful to have President Jim Adams’ inspirational leadership guiding our school community.

God bless,

Chairman of the Board

Chaminade Student is Intel Science Talent Search Finalist

Senior Sarine Shahmirian is one of the 40 finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search 2010 that will travel to Washington, D.C. in March to compete for awards and recognition! She will also potentially meet President Obama. Here's a description from the Intel website about the awards and week-long "Institute".

In March, the 40 Finalists travel to Washington, DC for the Intel Science Talent Institute. On the basis of interviews with the judging panel and presentation of their research, 10 top award winners are selected, including the top winner who is provided a $100,000 award. While in Washington, Finalists display and present their research to the public (more information on Intel STS Public Day 2010) at the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. Here Finalists explain their research to thousands of visitors, many of them important figures in the government and science communities, promoting independent, inquiry-based science research. Each year, younger, highly-motivated students who plan to enter the Intel Science Talent Search during their senior year are inspired at this public exhibition.

Chaminade is both proud and excited for Sarine!

Susannah's Passing

A simple Child,
That lightly draws its breath,
And feels its life in every limb,
What should it know of death?

Wordsworth’s lines resonate with us today as we mark the passing of Susannah Beazley to eternal life. What should a beautiful high school sophomore, so vibrant and full of life, know of death? Yet she has been called home to the Lord on this blessed day. We are left in tears, pondering this great loss of a beautiful daughter, sister, and friend. What can we do in a time of such intense sorrow but pray for God’s consoling hand on the Beazley family as we thank Him for granting the gift of life to Susannah. Her family and the Chaminade family were blessed to have her, if only for a little while.

Susannah’s passing, following so closely on Jessica’s earlier in the school-year, is a lot more pain than our Chaminade family should have to endure. Our only response can be to trust in the Lord more than ever. We know that trusting in God does not prevent suffering but it gives us the strength to endure the pain, to fully encounter our loss, to join our suffering with Jesus on the Cross and to realize that we become more holy through trials like these.

Today, our thought and prayers go out in a special way to Susannah’s family, especially her grieving parents, Ben and Sarah. We pray that, in these most difficult times, they may find comfort in the arms of their very own angel, Susannah. May God bless the Beazley family today and always.

Prayer for Suzy Beazley (pdf)

Academic Concerns Night

Academic Concerns Night is scheduled for Monday, October 19th from 5:30PM – 9:00 PM in the Student Center on the High School campus.  This is a valuable opportunity to dialog with the teachers in subjects where your student is not performing at a level of “C” or better.  By having the teacher, student and parents all meet to discuss how to improve in the class, we hope that this early, proactive strategy will pay dividends later in the semester.  Remember, this conference event yields the most benefit when you bring your student along.

Appointment binders are available in the main office, and sign-ups will continue through Friday, October 16th during regular business hours.  Your student can sign up for you if that is more convenient.  Sorry, but it is not possible to take sign-ups by phone or email.

Chaminade families who have witnessed Dr. Willis' seminar in the past have requested her to return and share her very powerful message with our families and our teens.  Don't let your teen driver miss this event.

Services for Jessica Roberts

As Remembered by Brother Adam Becerra:

Jessica Roberts looked at life with passion by asking questions such as, "What is our duty in life and how can we live our happiness in such a big world like this one?" Jessica was always attentive to people's needs and brought a smile to everyone who crossed her path.

In Religion, she put on her black glasses that "made her look smart" as she said, and listened carefully to the lesson. She was also a team player in softball. She motivated the students and took great pride in her accomplishments. Her strong faith was evident as she revealed it through her generosity and care for others. Jessica Roberts is alive in the heart of our school as we continue to keep her family in our prayers.

As a seventh grader, Jessica wrote:

“The most valuable lesson that I learned this year was that friends are the most important thing in our lives next to family… We need to cherish them with as much love as we give our parents…My friends always tried to be there for me and when they could not, I knew that they tried their absolute hardest to let me know how they felt and how they were there for me always…Happiness always followed me and my friends. My dream would be to… know that I had gone through life being a wonderful, loving person who knew right from wrong and who knew love from hate. I grew to know God in many ways.  God became my rock and I knew that I had strengthened our relationship for the better..”

God of all consolation,
in your unending love and mercy for us,
you turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life.
Show compassion to your people in sorrow.
Be our refuge and our strength to lift us
from the darkness of this grief
to peace and joy in your presence.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

A reading from the 1st letter of Paul to the Thessalonians:

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord for ever.

The Word of the Lord…. Thanks be to God.

Heavenly Father, we understand that we are all your children and that we will be joined with you in heaven when our time has come. Be with us as we grieve for the loss of Jessica, a member of our Chaminade family. Help us to understand that she is with you in the place where we will reunite together to live with you in heaven.  We ask you to be with the Roberts family, extending your healing touch to Mr. Roberts and consoling Jessica’s parents as they deal with the loss of their daughter.

In Jesus’ name we pray... Amen.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) for Chaminade Middle School

Next week all Middle School Students students will begin the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).  Sixth graders will begin testing on Monday, October 5 and continue through Wednesday, October 7.  Seventh and eighth graders will test Tuesday and Wednesday. The main purpose of this test is to provide information that can be used to improve instruction.

Sixth grade students will be given the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).  The CogAT measures the student’s ability to learn in school and will be administered to sixth graders on Monday.  Though standardized achievement scores cannot and should not replace teacher observations and classroom assessments, these scores do provide us with supplementary information that is useful in designing or choosing instructional materials and creating an effective learning environment.

Students will begin testing at 8:00 each morning.  A snack and drink will be provided during break.  School will dismiss at noon on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for ALL students; however, after school care will be available each day.

You can help your child’s performance on these tests by adhering to the following suggestions:

  • Have your child at school on time on all testing days.
  • Make sure your child has a supply of sharpened number two pencils, a good eraser and a free reading book.
  • Help your child to understand the importance of using their allotted time by double checking for careless mistakes.
  • See that your child is rested each day by enforcing a reasonable bedtime schedule.
  • Encourage your child to eat a nutritious breakfast.
  • Be certain your child remembers to bring his/her glasses (if necessary).
  • Send your child to school each day in a healthy frame of mind.  Stress the importance of the tests and doing one’s best; however, be careful not to create anxiety in your child.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
