Community Service Information

SERVICE, JUSTICE, AND PEACE

St. Paul reminds us to “share with any of God’s holy people who are in need: look for opportunities to be hospitable” (Romans 12:13).  Part of the religious studies curriculum focuses on a Community Service component.  Each student is required to do active service in the community.

  • 6th grade: 15 hours

  • 7th grade: 21 hours

  • 8th grade: 30 hours

What is the process of doing community service?

To receive credit for a community service project, the student must:

  1. Obtain a Community Service form from his/her Religion teacher or in the Campus Ministry Office.
  2. This form is to be filled out by the student, signed by the parent, and pre-approved by the religion teacher or Campus Minister.  ALL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS MUST BE PRE-APPROVED prior to participating in the service.  Otherwise, the hours will not be accounted for.
  3. Once the project has been pre-approved, the student takes the form to his/her supervisor to be signed, dated, and list the number of hours completed at the actual community service site.
  4. The student is to return the completed form to his/her religion teacher within ONE WEEK of the completed projected.  Otherwise, hours will not be accepted.

Where can community service projects be completed?

  • Campus Ministry holds a variety of community service activities on-campus which needs no pre-approval.  These projects will be listed in our Campus Ministry website and will be communicated to the student in their Religion class.
  • If a student is completing a project outside of Chaminade, student and parents must make sure that it is a NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION.  Students are to obtain a pre-approval form either from their Religion teacher or Campus Ministry.

What happens if hours are incomplete?

  • The student’s religion grade will be dropped one FULL letter grade.

When are community service hours due?

  • All hours must be completed by March 14, 2008.

If some of this information seems to be unclear, please refer to pages 12 and 13 in the student’s agenda book.  You may also contact the student’s Religion teacher or the Campus Ministry office.
