The Chaminade Middle School Library seats 40 students and houses a collection of books, periodicals, pamphlets and maps. The library is fully automated on a Local Area Network (L.A.N.). This means many library functions, including the card catalog, access to periodical indexes and articles and checkouts are via computer. This automation increases access to the collection and introduces students to sophisticated information-gathering skills.

Our Mission:
..to teach the skills necessary for the effective use of ideas and information, to provide a rich variety of materials to support the curriculum, and to promote a lifelong love of reading.

The library program supports and encourages daily class work, research assignments, and recreational reading. Chaminade Middle School Students receive progressive instruction in research methods which prepares them for the demands of advanced academic work. In addition, two exploratory classes, Student Librarians and Storytelling, are offered through the library.

Each year the library sponsors several programs for students including two book fairs, the California Reader Medal Award program, a visit by a noted author of books for young adults, and assists the English Department in the administration of the Accelerated Reader Program.

In addition, two special events are sponsored--The Adopt-A-Book Fair at October's Back to School Night, and the Celebrate Your Library program for which parents generously donate the cost of new book to the library on their child's birthday or other special event. The library benefits greatly from the support and interest generated by these events.

Library Resources

Local Area Network (L.A.N.)
The Middle School Library is fully automated and is on a Local Area Network with Internet access. Many resources and indexes are available at any of our numerous workstations. The L.A.N. enables us to expand our library beyond its walls and is accessible from all classrooms and the students' homes.

Library Catalog and Book Collection
The collection is arranged according to the Dewey Decimal classification system and contains about 7,500 volumes. Access to the collection is through Winnebago, our online public access catalog.

Periodicals
The library subscribes to twenty magazines and newspapers. Many back issues are available on microfiche and may be copied on our microfiche reader/printer. In addition, the library subscribes to the following periodical indexes on CD-ROM:

Resource One
Resource One indexes general periodicals (Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, etc.). Many of these periodicals are available full-text, i.e., the article itself is on the CD-ROM and may be printed out. Resource One is supplemented by an extensive microfiche collection.

SIRS (Social Issues Resource Service) Researcher, SIRS Renaissance, and SIRS Government Reporter
SIRS (Social Issues Resource Service) Researcher, SIRS Renaissance, and SIRS Government Reporter index magazines, newspapers, government and university publications not readily available elsewhere. SIRS Researcher is comprised mainly of perioidcals on science, health and the environment; SIRS Resaissance covers the arts and humanities; SIRS Government Reporter contains current event and country information. All articles on these databases are available full-text.

Biology Digest
Biology Digest offers full-text articles from science magazines and journals exclusively.

Reference Collection
Reference books are intended to be consulted from time to time when seeking specific information. This collection includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, and biographical resources. Some biographical references are on CD-ROM and are included on the L.A.N. While reference books generally remain in the library, overnight loans are available.

Multimedia CD-ROM's
The library has computers for use with multimedia CD-ROMs (CD-ROMs that include text, pictures, video, sound and animation). These CD-ROMs are for PCs and many are available for checkout.

Internet Access
Internet access is available in the library via Chaminade's T1 line.

Library Resource Specialists
As much as books, reference works and periodicals, the Library Resource Specialists are resources to be used. Please do not hesitate to ask for their help.
