So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane

Nita is the normal nerd girl with her only friends being books. She has read just about every book in the library and is tightly acquainted with the librarian. Nita has just one problem: she cannot keep her mouth shut and her opinions inside. That is probably the reason of why she keeps getting into fights with the bully, Joanne and her no-minded posse. As Nita tries to escape the fight and find a place to hide, she sees the library and runs into it and is told by the librarian, Ms. Lesser, that the downstairs section is empty and so she runs straight for it. Once down there, she looks at all of her “old friends” and runs her hand along the rows of books until one of the books seemed to “snag” her hand. As Nita pulled it out she thought it was a joke. So You Want to be a Wizard the book title read. Nita held the book in her hands just as Ms. Lesser told her that the bullies were gone and that she could go home. Taking the book with her, Nita got up, checked out the book, and went home, knowing there was an ambush waiting for her. She, of course, was right and at the end of the fight she had a black eye and several bruises, but most importantly her favorite write-on-anything, test-taking space-pen was gone. Will Nita ever get it back? Taking the book inside, Nita started to read it in her room. After reading the history of wizards, there was the oath. Feeling silly, Nita said the oath and her life changed. The next day, Nita went to one of her secret places where she could be alone but found out she wasn’t when the trees started talking to her. Running to a new secret place she knew. She found someone. A boy named Kit. Who is this “Kit” person? Is he a wizard, too? If he is a wizard, can he help Nita or will she be on her own?

I loved this book. It was full of surprises, suspense, adventure, and creativity. It makes you feel as if all of this could happen and makes you want to go out and find a book that teaches you how to be a wizard. I could read it twice, three times, maybe even more and never get tired of it.
