The Boxes by William Sleator
The Boxes is a book that is very suspenseful, mysterious, and an action story. It made me feel like I was on a roller coaster, just wondering what was beyond the next turn. This book is centered about a girl named Annie, and all of the adventures she takes part in with her best friend Henry. Annie is left with two mysterious boxes that her Uncle Marco gives her in the beginning of the story. She has to promise not to open either of the boxes, or put them next to one another. As time goes on Annie becomes very curious about these boxes and opens them thinking life couldn’t get any worse with her problems at school, her Uncle Marco leaving, and the Cruthley Development Company trying to pry their house away from them. Annie foolishly opens the boxes against her uncles requests and unleashes one of the most unusual things on the planet. Annie lets out a unheard of crablike metal creature, which multiplies rapidly. Not to mention the other box which contains a special clock which enables the slowing of time. Together with the clock (Lord), crablike creatures, and Annie they form the three-in-one. This three in one allows the slowing of time itself. How will this clock burden Annie, knowing she disobeyed her uncle? How will the clock profit Annie in the end? Only the readers of this spectacular story will know what happens next.
The Boxes is a wonderful book, that can be read by all age levels. It contains parts that are both frightening, suspenseful, and joyous. This book kept me on edge and alert of everything and anything. At any time I would recommend this book to any reader interested. I had an awesome time reading this book and I’m sure you will too.
